Lighting & Filling Us Up – Happy Lantern Festival!

The Lunar New Year comes to a close on the 15th day of the Lunar Calendar, this date is significant to many because it is known as Lantern Festival or Yuan Xiao Jie in Chinese. Lantern Festival will fall on Tuesday, February 19th this year. Given the long history of the Lantern Festival, there are many different ways of celebration fused into this special day. Many take to the street to celebrate with their lit lantern, lighting up the street and making it look so romantic that some would reference Lantern Festival as Chinese Valentine’s Day. Lantern in hand of all different sizes, all made to represent hope, happiness, and success and often used for wishes.

A symbolic item to consume during the Lantern Festival is rice balls. Rice balls are known as Tang Yuan in Chinese, which sounds very similar to the word Tuan Yuan, meaning “reunion” in Chinese. The rice ball is round, just like the first full moon that will be very apparent on the 15th day of the Lunar New Year. The glutinous rice balls are soft on the outside, with filling inside that could range from sesame, peanut, red bean, and more. Some may steam or fry it, but the most popular way to consume it is boiling and serving it in hot (syrup) water.  It makes for a great dessert to add sweetness and warmth to our stomachs with our hearts already filled with the same sentiments from reuniting with our family, friends and love ones.
